Finland declared its Independence on 6 December 1917 after more than 100 years under the rule of Russia after the Tsar was overthrown in a revolution.

On this day, the Finns also honour the events of World War II when the country nearly lost its independence.

Throughout the country, two white-and-blue candles will be seen twinkling in the windows of homes and other buildings, a tradition since the 19th century that symbolises Finish nationalism.

There will also be white-and-blue decorations as these are the Finnish national colours.
