A bilingual bedtime story in the “Mind Coaching” series, Sadness Holes relates to young readers the story of a five-year-old boy who loses his pet chick. The boy is left saddened, with a hole in his heart. His grandmother, representing life experience, says that loss of beloved life is a common occurrence. An alternative perspective to sweet fairy tales, such stories can provide realistic lessons for children and perhaps some immunity from societal maladies.At the programme launch, Praphan- sarn Publishing’s executive director, Arthorn Techatada, and Plearn Aksorn Book Centre’s executive director, Ranee Thongjua, together with four directors of the Educational Service Area Offices of Songkla – Pramote Songsingh, Prayat Anusilp, Prasith Nookoong and Sonjai Viboonkij – and the director of the Department of Non-Formal Education of Songkla,Wanya Tipdontri, were invited to receive a plate symbolizing the handover of the books. Teachers and school librarians also attended the ceremony.“Currently our libraries lack materials for students at secondary level. That’s why we cannot cultivate their interest in reading,” said Wittaya Klangwan, director of Wat Klongrian School. “The books we have are obsolete and damaged. Likewise, a budget to purchase new books is allotted every three years, and this small amount has to be shared with other activities and departments. These donated books will definitely help encourage students’ reading.”Mr Wittaya explained that his school is using innovative methods to persuade students to read. One of his ideas is to deliver books to classrooms during school lunch break, in the hope that this will attract more interest inElite+ 23
