To absorb the real pleasure of music, people should move away from thought, which can lead to self- criticism and keep you from perform- ing to your potential. The best way to play music, therefore, is to train the mind into a stage where you concentrate on the interval of the notes you are playing, being aware andobserving circumstances without judgement.“Thought can be our enemy. Of course thought can help solve something. But how many times do we use thought to put blame on ourselves?”The pianist suggested that per- forming music follows a similar mechanism to Buddhist philosophy, of being in the present and aware of the moment. “You just sit at the piano, play the notes without thinking of anything except the beauty of the sound.
