Of course there might be other cellists who were better, but Du Pre was the coolest for me.” Another personal idol is Truls Mork, a Norwegian cellist.Ms Tapalin has assumed a new role as teacher at Mahidol University’s College of Music, a task she finds very challenging and which has forced her to change her attitude.“Being a teacher, I feel responsible for my students. I can control myself as a musician, but as a teacher I can’t control how my students practise. Sometimes I get upset when they aren’t dedicated enough. I need to stay calm and be more understanding and try to convince them to work hard and make the most of their time when they play. ”For those who dream of becoming musicians, Ms Tapalin advises them to have passion for what they love. But passion alone is not enough.“When you want to become a musician or anything in life, you need to be inspired and passionate and love what you do. But there will be days when things don’t turn out as you expect, and you might get tired and bored. Then you need to have discipline and perseverance to keep going.”
