occasionally with darker patches. The Galapagos land iguana has an average lifespan in the wild of 60 to 70 years. It is classified by the IUCN as a vulnerable species. Its predators are hawks, herons and snakes; the survival rate of a young land iguana inthe wild is less than 10 per cent.The Galapagos marine iguana is the world’s only seagoing lizard and is endemic to the islands. There are seven subspecies of the Galapagos marine iguana that vary in size and colour from island to island. The Isabela marine iguana is the largest, while the Española subspecies is the most brightly coloured. Out of the seven subspecies, I saw and photographed five on this trip. They are the subspecies found on Isabela, Fernandina, Española, Santiago and the islands of Santa Cruz, South Plaza and North Seymour.
