Bangkok’s Top Five Weird Dining ExperiencesIf you’re stuck in a culinary routine, blow away your senses at these out-of-this-world eateriesThe switch from light to dark, from vision to blindness, can come as a shock. Cutlery has been placed in the proper order, you hear the chatter of waiters and other guests, but it’s hard to determine where the sounds come fromBangkok dining experiences range from gastronomic decadence costing a month’s rent for a mid-range apartment to street-side vendors where a dollar can satisfy your hunger and car exhaust add to the flavour. And somewhere within this range is your usual routine, which can get boring. Fortunately the city offers quite a few restaurants with out-of-the-box concepts. We have listed five options often regarded as “weird”. How weird is weird? Time to venture out of your comfort zone!Dine in the DarkThis is best described as a journey. You begin by waiting in a dimly lit bar area. The only indication of what is to come is the illuminated sign, and you feel you are about to enter a haunted house. A waitress arrives to prepare you for what comes next. You can choose a four-course meal from the Asian, Western, vegetarian or “surprise” options and take as long as you need (90 minutes is usually plenty). What’s in each category? It’s a mystery. You only find out through pictures after you’ve finished. You deposit all light-emitting objects in a secure box and are introduced to your blind guide, who will lead you through the dining experience, serve your food and tend to your needs. You’re led into the dining area with hands on your guide’s shoulders as when playing “train”. Now it’s completely dark; you see nothing at all.Elite+ 51
