Eating Shrimp with your HandsHow was your last experience shelling a crab with a knife and fork? Seafood is easiest when eating with your hands, isn’t it. Good news – some seafood restaurants in the city understand and decide you’re not going to get any cutlery. Some are pop-up stalls at the weekend market, others have fancy decor that would never suggest you’ll have to eat with your hands.Once you’re seated, they cover your table with a paper cloth. The food might come in a bucket and be thrown onto the tablecloth. Don’t give your waiter the eye; it’s expected. You may also get a napkin and a pair of single-use plastic gloves. Then off you go with a real finger-licking food experience.Specialty Ice CreamWould you like some dirt in your ice cream pot or teeth in your lemonade? Ice cream is a fun food and a few shops in Bangkok take it further. We’re talking ice cream sculptures made to resemble the unexpected. Take for example The Gardener Icecream, where creations are fashioned after flower pots filled with earth, plants and worms. But it’s delicious because the earth is made from crushed Oreos and the worms are gummy!Another example is Icedea Idea in Icecream, with more broadly themed treats. Order a grandma lemonade with its set of realistic-looking candy dentures. The teeth are made from iced milk and the gums are iced red sugar syrup. A Japanese tonkatsu meal imitates a deep-fried breaded pork set through four ice cream flavours: Japanese melon, vanilla, chocolate brownie and green tea. Crushed wafer sticks stand in for cabbage and it all goes well with the chocolate sauce. The visual impact of these creations can be disconcerting, but the results are delicious!Smiley Shrimp: 490/3 Phahon Yothin Road between BTS Saphan Kwai and Ari; 11am-10pm daily; 08-7333-7888.Holy Shrimp: Ratchada Train Market (Thailand Cultural Centre MRT); 6pm-midnight Wednesday-Sun- day; 095-694-0060.The Gardener Icecream: Chatuchak Market section 3, soi 44; 11am-6pm Saturday-Sunday; 089-044-0105.The Shrimp Lover: ground floor, Gateway Ekamai Shopping Centre (BTS Ekkamai); 10am-10pm; 091-751-5554.Icedea Idea in Icecream: 4th floor, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre; 11am-7pm, last order 6.30pm, closed Mondays; 089-834-5950.Elite+ 55
