UNESCO Director Shigeru Aoyagi on culture, peace and a sustainable Thailand.

UNESCO Director Shigeru Aoyagi on culture, peace and a sustainable Thailand.

As an entrepreneur who is always curious and tuned in to what’s going on in the realm of society, politics and finance, I have become increasingly interested in the creative industry and how it will drive the economy of Thailand’s future. I personally think it’s a sensible and smart approach to boosting the economy as new technologies continue to emerge that increasingly make it possible to capitalise on culture, art and creativity, all of which Thailand is blessed with.

It is my great pleasure to see the new Unesco Bangkok Director, Shigeru Aoyagi, on the cover of this latest issue of Elite+. He has provided us with insight into the work and various roles of Unesco Bangkok, as well as a glimpse of how Thailand can drive its economy through its culture, arts and creativity. I’m sure you will be as intrigued and inspired as I was after reading the full interview.

Continuing on the theme of the creative economy, we are proud to feature our special contributor Pawit Mahasarinand, the director of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, who sheds light on Thai-Taiwanese cultural collaboration and its ongoing impact and future potential in this edition’s Country Portrait. Flip through the other pages of this issue and enjoy the various stories that our team has put together for you.

This issue also marks our fifth anniversary, and as every year before we will celebrate the latest milestone with an anniversary gala dinner. This year, it will be held at the Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok on September 17, an event brimming with friends, partners, supporters and honourable guests. Most importantly, I would like to extend my special thanks to our keynote speaker, Dr Kobsak Pootrakul, who will grace the celebration with wisdom and insights into Thailand’s economic prospects. Please join us for this special occasion – register with the QR code provided one week prior to the event date and we will be delighted to welcome you.

Since our inception, much has changed, and we have evolved into a publication dedicated to bringing Asean to the world. As we expand our online and digital presence, we intend to give you more stories and insights from all over Asean through our digital and print platforms. Meanwhile, thanks to our partners and sponsors, you will soon not only be able to read about Asean, but also be able visit these wonderful cities and countries. Stay tuned for our upcoming travel projects and we look forward to exploring Asia and Asean together with you.
