Message from HE Pavel Pitel, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Thailand
on the Commemoration of the Czech Republic’s Independence
Each year, on the 28th of October, the Czech Republic solemnly commemorates one of the most significant milestones in our national history: the establishment of the independent state of Czechoslovakia in 1918. This historic event, which marked our emergence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, holds a profound place in the collective memory of the Czech people. It stands as a testament to our enduring pursuit of freedom, self-determination and the principles of democratic governance.
Today, more than a century later, these ideals remain as relevant as ever. The Czech Republic has traversed a path marked by both triumphs and trials—having endured periods of occupation, experienced the challenges of division and embraced the opportunities that come with transformation. Throughout, however, the democratic spirit of our nation has never faltered. Our country stands today not only as the guardian of a rich and diverse cultural heritage but also as a dynamic, innovative society that prioritises openness, education and creative engagement with the world. Czech citizens continue to cherish the fundamental values of democracy, the rule of law, human dignity, cultural diversity, innovation and active participation in international cooperation.
In this context, the relationship between Thailand and the Czech Republic serves as a source of particular pride and promise. Our two nations have developed warm and fruitful cooperation across a wide range of fields, including trade, tourism, education and cultural exchange. On this day of reflection and celebration, we reaffirm our resolve to deepen these ties still further. We remain committed to nurturing people-to-people connections, expanding academic and business exchange and honouring our mutual appreciation for cultural richness and tradition. Each year, a growing number of Thai visitors are drawn to the charm of Prague and the broader Czech Republic, just as more Czech travellers discover the unique beauty and famed hospitality of Thailand.
As we mark this important anniversary, we express our conviction that it is the younger generation, who will inherit the legacy of freedom, who will shape our shared future. By embracing the challenges and opportunities of an interconnected world, we believe that today’s youth—both Czech and Thai—will advance the principles of mutual understanding, peace and prosperity for all.
Let us remember the past with gratitude and move forward together with renewed commitment, guided by the enduring ideals that inspired our journey towards independence and continue to shape the Czech Republic today.
