Message from HE Ambassador Remco van Wijngaarden of the Kingdom of the Netherlands

on the Occasion of King’s Day

As the Netherlands celebrates King’s Day, or Koningsdag, it is a pleasure to share this special moment with friends and partners around the world, including here in Thailand. This festive occasion offers not only a time for celebration, but also an opportunity to reflect on the strong and long-lasting relationship between our two countries. Inspired by our 422 years of diplomatic relations, the theme of our King’s Day celebrations this year in Thailand is “Four Centuries of Connection”.

Observed each year on the 27th of April, King’s Day marks the birthday of His Majesty King Willem-Alexander. Across the Netherlands, cities, towns and waterways transform into lively spaces filled with music, colour and a distinctive sense of togetherness. The vibrant orange seen everywhere represents more than tradition, it reflects a shared spirit of unity and national pride. At its heart, King’s Day also highlights the values that shape Dutch society: openness, inclusiveness, creativity and a deep respect for freedom, equality and the rule of law.

The friendship between Thailand and the Netherlands has grown over centuries, rooted in early exchanges and strengthened through continuous trade, investments and collaboration. Today, our partnership spans a wide range of sectors. From exchanges of knowledge on water management and sustainable agriculture to trade, innovation and education, these connections are further enriched by cultural exchange and close cooperation between the communities of our two Kingdoms.

In a world facing increasing uncertainty, with ongoing conflicts that continue to affect many regions and its peoples, the importance of dialogue, mutual respect and international cooperation has never been more evident. The Netherlands remains firmly committed to supporting peace, stability and a fair rules-based international order. One that supports all countries, bigger and smaller. The Netherlands is a firm advocate for building lasting solutions through cooperation and mutual respect for each other’s interests. In this context, the Netherlands and Thailand share a common understanding of the importance of working together. Whether addressing climate challenges, advancing sustainability or fostering inclusive growth, our cooperation reflects a shared ambition to create lasting and meaningful impact.

Equally important are the close ties between our people. The Netherlands continues to welcome Thai students, professionals and visitors while Thailand remains a valued and cherished destination for many Dutch citizens. These exchanges bring our societies closer and deepen mutual understanding in ways that go beyond formal cooperation.

This year also carries a sense of transition. As the Embassy prepares for its move to a new location, we take this moment to appreciate the connections built over time. While the setting may change, the friendships, partnerships and shared aspirations will continue to thrive.

On this joyful occasion, I warmly wish all Dutch nationals and friends of the Netherlands in Thailand a wonderful King’s Day. May it be a celebration filled with happiness, connection and the continued strengthening of the bond between our two nations.
