The Embassy of Argentina in Thailand, in collaboration with the Hyatt Regency Bangkok Sukhumvit and eight Thai wine importers, recently hosted an Argentine Malbec wine tasting on the occasion of Malbec World Day, celebrated annually on 17 April.
The event started with opening remarks by Mr Javier De Cicco, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Argentina, and by Mr Sammy Carolus, General Manager of Hyatt Regency Bangkok Sukhumvit.
They were followed by Nanthanan “Gift” Phoraksacharoen, a tango teacher and organiser of Bangkok Tango Practica/Milonga, and Mr Ren Archie, a dance instructor and owner of Bailamos Studio Pattaya, who both delighted the public with a passionate tango performance.
Tango is a musical genre and ballroom dance that originated in Argentina in the late 19th century and then spread internationally in the 20th century as it grew in popularity in many countries, including Thailand. Today, there are many schools and groups dedicated to teaching and promoting Tango.
After the Tango performance, guests were invited to taste the different Argentine Malbec wines provided by the eight Thai wine importing companies. The wines were paired with an assortment of food, snacks and desserts catered by the Hyatt Regency Bangkok Sukhumvit. These included Argentine staples, like chicken milanese (schnitzel), roasted beef “asado” with chimichurri sauce, and “criolla” beef stew (bife a la criolla).
At the end of the event, a Lucky Draw was held with prizes such as Malbec wines given by the Thai wine importers.
The eight participating Thai wine importers and Argentine wineries represented by each of them were Ambrose Wine Co. Ltd - Kaiken Winery; Boozia Distribution Co. Ltd. - Luigi Bosca Winery; Central Food Retail Co. Ltd. - Familia Zuccardi Winery; Enoteca (Thailand) Co. Ltd. - Norton Winery; Independent Wine & Spirit (Thailand) Co. Ltd. - Catena Zapata Winery; Italthai Hospitality - Escorihuela Gascon Winery; Noble Marketing Co. Ltd. - Antigal Winery, and TA Beverage Distribution Co. Ltd. - Marcelo Peleritti & Miguel Priore Winery.
Argentina is the world’s 5th largest producer and 10 largest exporter of wine, with earnings reaching USD 933 million in 2024. Known for their quality, Argentine wines, considered a premium beverage, are a major player in the mid- and high price ranges. Malbec, Bonarda and Cabernet Sauvignon are the most widely produced red varieties in Argentina.
