The National Day of Poland

The National Day of Poland

Adoption of the 3rd May Constitution by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1791 was one of the most significant events in Polish history, which resonates until today. Back then, this document was meant to help Polish people preserve what matters the most: sovereignty, national identity and well-being of the citizens. In current turbulent times, these values have not lost their importance at all.

3rd May Constitution was not merely a manuscript. It was a symbol which unified Poles who lost their country in 1795 for 123 years. Even though it was a long period, the Constitution enabled our predecessors to keep their identity, pride and patriotism. It was a symbol of sovereignty which enabled them to dream about and work towards regaining independence in 1918.

Aside from its cultural significance, the Constitution had clear and ambitious objectives for strengthening and modernizing Poland. It aimed to build a modern, capable government by reinforcing central authority as well as introducing the separation of powers into legislative, executive and judicial which we know nowadays. It also did not omit very important things for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: inclusivity and tolerance. It was exemplified by improving the status and rights of townspeople and peasants as well as promoting religious freedom.

After over two hundred years, we can say that we follow the legacy of the 3rd May Constitution. It is safe to assume that the authors of this document would be proud of Poland’s economic, political and social development today.

Hard work for modernization and a better country resulted in Poland becoming the 20th biggest economy in the world this year, with the GDP exceeding 1 trillion USD. It is a huge milestone for our country, showing that ambition and determination can lead to great success. This year Poland is also set to be Europe’s fastest growing large economy, showcasing the willingness to work for a prosperous country.

Despite the fact that the Constitution was in force for a short time being, the intentions for its adoption are still with us. A prosperous, sovereign and secure country is something that we work for every day. Although 235 years passed, this anniversary reminds us how important it is to join the common effort for a better future.
