Message from the HE Ambassador Cecilia Galarreta, Ambassador of Peru to Thailand
on the occasion of Peru’s 204th Independence Anniversary
and the Birthday Anniversary of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua
On behalf of the Government and People of Peru, it is my distinct honour to extend our warmest greetings to the Government, partners and dear friends of the Kingdom of Thailand on the occasion of the 204th Anniversary of Peru’s National Independence, which happily coincides with the birthday anniversary of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua this 28th of July.
This year is especially meaningful as we proudly celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations between Peru and Thailand. Over these decades, our nations have built a partnership founded on trust, mutual respect and a shared vision of prosperity. Today, Peru and Thailand stand as strategic partners, each serving as a bridge between Latin America and Southeast Asia.
Though geographically distant, our countries share notable commonalities. We are heirs to ancient, rich civilizations that continue to shape our identities. Both nations enjoy extraordinary natural treasures, ranking among the world’s most biodiverse, and we are known for the creativity and resilience of our peoples. These qualities, along with breath-taking landscapes and world-acclaimed cuisines, have made Peru and Thailand leading cultural and tourist destinations. Peru’s culinary excellence continues to shine globally, with restaurants like Central and Maido in Lima ranked among the world’s best, reflecting the growing international appreciation for Peruvian flavours.
Our cooperation thrives across many areas. Thailand is Peru’s third-largest trading partner within ASEAN, and together we are working to upgrade our Free Trade Agreement into a comprehensive one to unlock greater opportunities. Thailand also remains the only country in Southeast Asia with which Peru maintains a dedicated Development Cooperation Program. Looking ahead, the 2025-2027 programme is under coordination, aiming to strengthen collaboration in alternative development, health, environmental sustainability, science, technology and culture.
At the multilateral level, our partnership grows steadily. Peru and Thailand are active members of APEC. Last year, Peru hosted this Forum, building on Thailand’s successful presidency in 2022. Within ASEAN, Peru holds the status of Development Partner, achieved with Thailand’s valued support.
To mark the 60th anniversary of our diplomatic ties, our Embassy launched the initiative, “Torito de Pucará: Peru and Thailand United by Art”. Six impressive Toritos de Pucará, reinterpreted by one Peruvian and five Thai artists, are now displayed at Phahon Yothin Metro Art Station, Siam Discovery, One Bangkok, Wat Pho Temple, Songwat and Iconsiam. I invite everyone to join this contest for a chance to win one of two round-trip tickets to Peru (one winner per ticket) by photographing the six Toritos and sharing them online. I also encourage you to follow our Embassy channels for more details and upcoming cultural and economic activities.
Let us celebrate this occasion with pride as we reflect on our shared journey and look ahead with optimism. I extend my heartfelt wishes for the continued prosperity and happiness of the Peoples of Peru and Thailand and for ever-stronger bonds between our nations.
Muchas gracias. Khob khun kha.
