Message by HE Kristiina Kuvaja-Xanthopoulos,
on the 108th Independence Day of Finland
On the solemn and joyous occasion of Finland’s 108th Independence Day, I am delighted to reflect on the deep bonds of friendship and cooperation between Finland and Thailand.
Independence is a cherished value for us Finns, achieved through resilience and steadfast determination. Today, we continue to uphold the principles of democracy, equality and respect of human rights, which form the foundation of our stable and prosperous society.
Thailand and Finland share a long tradition of friendship and mutual understanding. Our ties span education, trade, culture, innovation and people-to-people exchanges, enriching both societies. In 2024, close to 100,000 Finnish visitors came to Thailand and in 2025, already by August, Thailand had seen close to 65,000 Finnish visitors. This is reflecting the enduring popularity of this beautiful country among Finns. It means every 70th Finn visited Thailand last year.
Despite the global security challenges we face, particularly Russia’s illegal war of aggression in Ukraine, Finland remains committed to supporting peace and stability. Our unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty is solid. Our dedication and commitment to peacebuilding reflects our belief that peace is achieved through cooperation, trust and respect for international law.
As we celebrate this special day, we can take pride in Finland's achievements as a stable, democratic and egalitarian nation. May this day remind us of the strength found in unity and the collaboration across borders.
I wish all Finns and friends of Finland in Thailand a wonderful 108th Independence Day.
Kristiina Kuvaja-Xanthopoulos
Ambassador of Finland to the Kingdom of Thailand
