Meet Mr Thongvut Pintaruchi, ASOMFA President
By Kathleen Pokrud
The Association of the Spouses of the Officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (ASOMFA) was initially established with the intention of fostering unity, mutual support and social responsibility among the spouses of Thai diplomatic officials. From its inception, ASOMFA has served as a vital platform to connect the spouses of Thai diplomats in exchanging experience and sharing know-how, which is invaluable for families navigating the unique demands of diplomatic life. Elite+ sat down with Khun Thongvut Pintaruchi to learn how ASOMFA has evolved beyond a social network into a respected organization that actively contributes to cultural diplomacy, charitable initiatives and the promotion of Thailand’s image both at home and abroad.
As ASOMFA president, Mr Thongvut shared how his professional journey has shaped his leadership approach. “My work experience has instilled in me the enduring values of collaboration, empathy, and a shared sense of purpose, which have naturally shaped my approach to leadership. Having had the opportunity to accompany my spouse, Mrs Eksiri Pintaruchi, currently the Permanent Secretary of the Foreign Ministry on her postings, I have witnessed first-hand the demands and challenges that the families of Thai diplomats face while living abroad on postings. I firmly believe that effective leadership is not the result of individual effort, but rather the collective strength, commitment and goodwill of a united team. I have blended my first-hand knowledge of the diplomatic life with my management skills from my professional life and promote an inclusive environment where every voice matters and every effort is geared towards the same goal, which is not only to support our diplomatic spouses, but to also promote and uplift the image of Thailand, both at home and abroad.
“ASOMFA is, at its core, a community sustained by the dedication, generosity and wholehearted support of its members without which no success can be achieved for any of our activities. Each committee member and volunteer contribute time, experience and expertise with a strong spirit of unity and common purpose. Through this collective effort and mutual encouragement, ASOMFA is able to carry out our activities and advance our mission.
“I am deeply grateful to the entire committee and all ASOMFA members, whose cooperation and shared commitment form the foundation of the Association’s continued progress and meaningful impact.”

Khun Thongvut explained that ASOMFA sees itself as much more than an association. He elaborated, “In many ways, ASOMFA is like the host at their home, creating a welcoming, inclusive and caring environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging. With this spirit, ASOMFA places great importance on fostering cross-cultural understanding by organising cultural exchanges, social gatherings and community activities among diplomatic families of diverse nationalities. Over the past few years, ASOMFA has further strengthened our collaboration with the Spouses of Heads of Missions (SHOMs), organising visits to museums and cultural institutions, as well as interactive activities such as Thai and international cooking classes. ASOMFA promotes Thai culture and heritage through these signature initiatives to showcase Thai customs, arts and national identity.
“For members stationed abroad, ASOMFA maintains close and continuous communication, offering moral support and a reassuring connection to home. In this way, the Association helps ensure that every member, regardless of where they are posted, continues to feel warmly connected to the Thai diplomatic family.”
Diplomatic life often involves frequent relocations and cultural transitions. Khun Thongvut admitted that diplomatic spouses and families often have to navigate these unique challenges. “ASOMFA recognises that diplomatic life requires not only adaptability, but also a strong sense of connection and shared understanding. In today’s digital era, social networks allow our members to stay closely connected at all times, regardless of where they are in the world. This constant communication enables members to support one another, exchange perspectives, and offer guidance whenever it is needed.
“A key strength of ASOMFA lies in the invaluable experience of senior members, which is generously passed on to the next generation. Through our annual activities held under the spirit of ‘Sharing Wisdom, Encouraging Inquiry’, known in Thai as “พี่แนะ น้องถาม”, experienced members mentor and advise the younger generations in an open and supportive environment. These exchanges help families prepare both practically and emotionally for overseas postings and life transitions.
“Beyond dialogue and mentorship, ASOMFA also organises practical training sessions, including etiquette and wardrobe workshops, as well as programs focused on Thai textiles and traditional attire. These activities not only enhance cultural confidence in international settings but also help spouses maintain a strong sense of Thai identity while representing the country abroad.”
Khun Thongvut proudly proclaimed that in recent years ASOMFA has undertaken a range of meaningful initiatives that reflect its positive impact both within the diplomatic community and in engagement with the broader Thai society. “First, in the area of inclusive community engagement, ASOMFA members visited the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD) 60+ Plus Bakery & Chocolate Café in June 2025. This initiative provided diplomatic spouses with the opportunity to learn alongside persons with disabilities, reinforcing the values of inclusion, mutual respect and social awareness while highlighting the remarkable capabilities and contributions of the disability community.
“Second, ASOMFA has demonstrated our commitment to women’s empowerment and social development. In February 2025, members of the Association participated in a visit to the Central Women’s and Family Development Learning Center in Nonthaburi, together with spouses of foreign ambassadors. The program focused on vocational training and capacity-building initiatives.
“Third, ASOMFA has continued to promote cultural diplomacy and heritage exchange. In November 2025, the spouse of the Foreign Minister, together with the ASOMFA president, led a delegation of diplomatic spouses and Foreign Affairs Ministry officials to the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles to attend the exhibition, ‘Chud Thai: Dressing the Nation in Heritage’. This activity exemplified ASOMFA’s role in fostering appreciation of Thai cultural heritage within the diplomatic community and advancing people-to-people connections.
“Notably, ASOMFA also played an active role in the Thai Red Cross Fair 2025. Under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Association organized a booth featuring the sale of imported international products and carefully selected pre-owned items, with proceeds contributed to the Thai Red Cross Society. This initiative reflects ASOMFA’s long-standing commitment to humanitarian support, charitable fundraising and public service while fostering cooperation and goodwill among diplomatic families and the wider public.
“Through these diverse projects and events, ASOMFA continues to serve as a bridge between the diplomatic circle and Thai society, promoting cultural understanding, social responsibility and a shared commitment to the public good.”
In looking ahead to the future of ASOMFA, Khun Thongvut frankly expressed, “Times have changed, many spouses today have their own professional careers, the number of female diplomats has increased and engaging male spouses remains a challenge. In response, ASOMFA’s goal is to attract and involve a new generation of members through more inclusive and flexible approaches.
“My vision for ASOMFA is to continue evolving as a supportive, inclusive and forward-looking community that reflects these realities. As the roles of diplomatic spouses become more diverse and dynamic, ASOMFA will remain a trusted platform for connection, learning and shared purpose, open to all, regardless of gender or background.
“We must acknowledge that the world has changed and with it, traditional distinctions between gender roles have significantly diminished. Today, there are very few responsibilities that can be defined as belonging exclusively to men or women. The role of women has expanded considerably and, at the same time, the role of men has also grown. While this may still be an early stage of transformation, it is essential that we prepare ourselves for a future where there is no longer a clear division between ‘men’s roles’ and ‘women’s roles’. Openness, understanding and acceptance of change are therefore crucial.
“I envision ASOMFA continuing to foster resilience and adaptability among its members. Above all, ASOMFA will continue to serve as a bridge between the diplomatic community and Thai society, empowering its members to contribute positively and with confidence in an ever-changing world of diplomacy.”
As the interview drew to a close, Khun Thongvut reiterated, “In a world shaped by rapid change and global interdependence, the quiet power of cultural diplomacy and community has never been more meaningful. Beyond policies and protocols, it is human connection, grounded in mutual respect, empathy and cultural understanding that gives diplomacy its enduring strength. It is my sincere hope that ASOMFA’s journey serves as a gentle reminder that diplomacy is not only practiced in formal halls, but also lived through everyday acts of kindness, cultural exchange and unity. Together, these small yet sincere efforts hold the power to inspire understanding and create a more harmonious world.”
