It is a great honour to address the readers of Elite+ as we commemorate Guatemala’s Independence Day, celebrated each year on 15 September. This year marks the 205th anniversary of our independence, a deeply significant occasion that invites us to honour our history, celebrate the richness and diversity of our national identity, and look to the future with renewed hope, confidence and determination.
On 15 September 1821, Guatemala began a new chapter as an independent nation. More than two centuries later, we continue to reaffirm the values of freedom, sovereignty and unity that have guided our journey. We take immense pride in our rich and diverse cultural heritage deeply rooted in the extraordinary legacy of the Maya civilization and enriched over the centuries by the traditions, cultures and peoples that have shaped our identity.
Guatemala is a nation of ancient roots and an entrepreneurial spirit, committed to building a future of greater well-being, prosperity and opportunity for all. In pursuing this goal, we firmly believe in dialogue, cooperation and respect for international law. We are also convinced that truly meaningful relationships between nations are built not only through diplomacy, but also through the bonds that connect our peoples, businesses, universities, communities and cultural traditions.
In this spirit, I am especially pleased to highlight the increasingly close friendship between the Republic of Guatemala and the Kingdom of Thailand. Our bilateral relationship continues to grow stronger, founded upon mutual respect, shared interests and a sincere desire to bring our countries and peoples even closer together.
In 2027, we will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Guatemala and Thailand. This important milestone will allow us to honour seven decades of friendship and cooperation while also looking towards the future and identifying new opportunities for political, economic, technical, educational, tourism and cultural collaboration.
In recent years, we have made significant progress in advancing our bilateral agenda. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations, the Letter of Intent on Development Cooperation and the Agreement on Reciprocal Visa Exemption for Holders of Diplomatic and Official Passports are concrete expressions of a dynamic and steadily growing relationship. These achievements have been complemented by increasingly close political dialogue and stronger cooperation between our institutions.
This progress reflects our shared commitment to building a modern, solid and results-oriented relationship that delivers tangible benefits to both societies. We intend to continue expanding this cooperation and exploring new initiatives in areas such as education, tourism, culture, innovation, science and technology.
Trade and investment are also essential pillars of this growing partnership. Guatemala has a particular interest in expanding its presence in the Thai market and offering Thai consumers a wider variety of high-quality Guatemalan products, including our renowned coffee and rum, as well as other value-added agro-industrial products.
We likewise invite Thai companies and investors to discover the opportunities Guatemala has to offer—not only as an investment destination, but also as a strategic gateway to the markets of Central America and the wider Americas. Our privileged geographical location, natural wealth, talented workforce and productive capacity make Guatemala a partner of great potential for Thailand.
People-to-people ties are equally fundamental. Tourism, education and cultural exchanges provide valuable opportunities to deepen mutual understanding, appreciate each other’s traditions and discover the many things that unite us.
Guatemala, the Heart of the Maya World, welcomes visitors with magnificent archaeological cities, volcanoes, lakes, rainforests, colonial towns and a vibrant living culture expressed through its languages, textiles, cuisine, music and ancestral traditions. Our country offers unique experiences that reveal not only the grandeur of its past, but also the creativity, diversity and warmth of its present.
We look forward to welcoming an increasing number of Thai visitors to discover Guatemala’s beauty, cultural richness and hospitality. At the same time, we hope to promote greater awareness in Guatemala of Thailand’s extraordinary cultural heritage, dynamism and, above all, the warmth and generosity of its people.
As we approach the 70th anniversary of our diplomatic relations, we have an opportunity not only to celebrate the achievements of the past seven decades, but also to build an even stronger and more ambitious partnership for the years ahead. I am confident that, through continued dialogue and ever-closer cooperation, Guatemala and Thailand will continue to open new avenues of mutual benefit and bring our peoples closer together.
On this meaningful occasion, I wish to extend a very special greeting to the Guatemalan community living in Thailand. Through their work, talent and profound love for our homeland, each of its members represents Guatemala with pride and contributes every day to building bridges of friendship and understanding between our societies.
I also extend my sincere gratitude to the Government and people of the Kingdom of Thailand for the hospitality and generosity they have always shown us, as well as to our many Thai friends who join us in this celebration and whose friendship strengthens the deep and enduring bonds between our two nations.
